Photorealistic vs Stylized Avatar
The design choice between a lifelike human likeness and a deliberately non-realistic one.
Photorealistic avatars aim to be indistinguishable from filmed people, which raises both the production bar and the risk of uncanny effects. Stylized avatars accept obvious artifice, which can be cheaper to produce and more forgiving of imperfection. The choice is usually driven by audience, platform and the need for the character to read as synthetic.
