On 16 October 2026 Alibaba Cloud posted a notice on its website that its Virtual Digital Human product will be retired "due to product strategy adjustments", as reported by Every Day Economic News. The timeline has three stages: from 30 November 2026 new purchases stop, with existing customers able to continue until their subscriptions expire; from 31 May 2027 renewals and version updates stop for existing customers; and on 30 November 2027 the service shuts down entirely, with the console, support services and ticketing taken offline and refunds ending on that date. Alibaba Cloud directed customers to migrate to three Marketplace alternatives: Ant Lingjing Digital Human, Xiangxin (FaceUnity) Digital Human and Yizhi Intelligent AI Livestream Digital Human.

Why it matters for digital humans: A hyperscaler withdrawing a first-party digital human product is a useful counterweight to the sector's growth narrative, and the 13-month wind-down reads as orderly rather than distressed. The direction of travel is the interesting part: Alibaba Cloud is pointing customers at third-party vendors on its own Marketplace rather than at a replacement it builds, which suggests it treats avatar rendering as a thin layer above its model and media services rather than a product worth owning. For buyers it is the familiar lesson about building a customer-facing persona on a platform primitive — budget for migration, and keep the avatar's scripts, knowledge base and consent records portable.
