Microsoft has removed Mico, the animated character introduced in Copilot Voice in October 2025, from the voice interface, reporting on 14 August 2026 confirmed. The character has been reassigned to Learn Live, described as a voice-based study mode that guides users through subjects and assignments. The change accompanies Microsoft merging its consumer and work Copilot applications.

In its explanation, Microsoft said Mico "helped us learn about warmth, expressiveness, and how people want to talk with AI. Those learnings are shaping Copilot going forward," and that "Learn is where the character has the most room to grow, with tutoring sessions that give Mico more to react to and teach through." Spoken interaction with Copilot Voice is unchanged; only the animated presentation is removed.

Why it matters for digital humans: A useful negative result from the largest possible test population. Mico was a low-realism, expressive character rather than a photoreal human, and Microsoft's own framing is that the persona had little to react to in a general-purpose assistant. The survival of the character in a tutoring context matches what the research literature keeps finding: embodiment earns its cost where there is a sustained, social task, and reads as decoration where the interaction is a series of one-off requests. Worth citing the next time a client asks for a face on a transactional assistant.
